Earlier this month, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) told Congress that the majority of U.S. railroads will not meet the December 31, 2015 deadline for positive train control (PTC) implementation.

The most recent edition of the Truckload and Intermodal Cost Indexes from Cass Information Systems and Avondale Partners showed that truckload and intermodal rates for the month of July were mixed.
UPS said this week it has officially completed the closing of its $1.8 billion acquisition of Coyote Logistics. The deal was made official on July 31.

At an average of $2.615 per gallon, the price is down 0.2 cents compared to last week, with prices dropping a cumulative 29.9 cents going back to the week of May 25, when the average price was at $2.914 per gallon.

Seasonally-adjusted (SA) for-hire truck tonnage in July was up 2.8 percent compared to June at 135.0 (2000=100) and marked its second-highest monthly reading ever, next to January’s 135.8.

Following an announcement made it made earlier this month, the European Commission said late last week that it has pushed back its previous deadline of December 8 to January 13 in regards to FedEx’ planned acquisition of Netherlands-based TNT-NV.

The most recent in which could be described as a series of large-scale global 3PL (third-party logistics) acquisitions was announced today, with Geodis, a $6.1 billion France-based 3PL saying it has entered into an agreement to acquire Brentwood, Tennessee-based $1.3 billion OHL (formerly known as Ozburn Hessey Logistics).

Unless you’re a major oil company or in the oil exploration business, the precipitous fall in the price of crude oil is providing a major and unexpected financial dividend. Truck shippers, in particular, are reaping a windfall as their fuel surcharges are dropping like leaves in the autumn breeze.
