Seasonally-adjusted (SA) for-hire truck tonnage in July was up 2.8 percent compared to June at 135.0 (2000=100) and marked its second-highest monthly reading ever, next to January’s 135.8.

The most recent in which could be described as a series of large-scale global 3PL (third-party logistics) acquisitions was announced today, with Geodis, a $6.1 billion France-based 3PL saying it has entered into an agreement to acquire Brentwood, Tennessee-based $1.3 billion OHL (formerly known as Ozburn Hessey Logistics).

Carloads were down 4.4 percent annually at 288,460 and were below the week ending August 1 at 289,657 and ahead of the week ending July 25 at 286,660.

The Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported this week that its Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) dropped 0.3 percent from May to June, following a 0.8 percent increase from April to May and a 1.8 percent decline from March to April.

Infor, a supply chain and logistics technology services and ERP software provider, said it plans to acquire GT Nexus, a global provider of cloud-based global commerce technology, for $675 million. Infor said the deal is expected to become official within 45 days, pending regulatory approval.

At an average of $2.617 per gallon, the price was down 5.1 cents compared to last week, with prices dropping a cumulative 29.7 cents going back to the week of May 25, when the average price was at $2.914 per gallon.
