A week ago, the average price per gallon of diesel gasoline saw its steepest decline in more than two years, when it fell 7 cents to $3.535. This week took that decline a step further, with the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration (EIA) reporting that the average price this week fell 11.6 cents to $3.419 per gallon.

With an eye on further expansion of its e-commerce business and related reverse logistics processes, transportation and logistics bellwether FedEx last night announced it has inked an agreement to acquire Pittsburgh-based GENCO, a third-party logistics (3PL) services provider specializing in product lifecycle and reverse logistics.

The Highway Trust Fund is irretrievably broken and should be eliminated in favor of a new system of revenue streams or by dedicating a portion of the federal income tax to pay for transportation. That’s the conclusion of a new multi-year report by the Eno Foundation, an influential Washington transportation think tank. The report, released in early December, was funded by the Rockefeller Foundation.

The biggest issue for transport in 2015 is funding for Interstate highways. That current funding will expire in May after a stop-gap nine-month continuing resolution expires. Whether the new Congress has the gumption to tackle the sticky problem of how to pay for much-needed highway and bridge reconstruction is an open question, however.

Commerce reported that November retail sales at $449.3 billion were up 0.7 percent compared to October and up 5.1 percent compared to November 2013, and the NRF said that November retail sales, which exclude automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants, were up 0.6 percent seasonally-adjusted month-to-month over October and increased 3.2 percent annually on an unadjusted basis.
