Class I railroad carrier CSX last night reported record first quarter earnings of $449 million and $0.43 per share. The earnings per share performance exceeded Wall Street expectations of $0.38 per share and was up 23 percent annually.
It is the fine print, execution and enforcement of the year-old CSA program that is irking trucking industry leaders and officials.

TransCore’s DAT North American Freight Index, which reflects spot market freight availability on its network of load boards in the United States and Canada, posted a 40 percent gain in March over February and was down 6.1 percent annually compared to March 2011.
One week after the price per gallon of diesel reached its highest mark since checking in at $4.208 per gallon the week of August 18, 2008, the price dropped for the second time in the last three weeks, according to the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration (EIA).

FedEx said this morning it is in discussions about a potential plan to acquire TATEX, a France-based B2B express transportation company focused on heavy shipments. This potential deal follows FedEx’ early April acquisition of Poland-based courier company Opek Sp.Z o.o.
Drewry will incorporate the additional KPIs into a new quarterly report, the details of which will be announced later this month

The Department of Justice estimates that state governments lose $5 billion a year due to cigarette smuggling.
Data released today by the United States Department of Commerce and the National Retail Federation (NRF) indicated that slow economic momentum is ongoing, with both reporting that March retail sales showed growth.
GAO officials said the objective of this report was to address actions the USPS has taken since 2006 to reduce excess capacity in facilities, staff, equipment and transportation; plans the USPS is making to consolidate its mail processing network; and key stakeholder issues and challenges related to its plans.
