While transportation infrastructure funding on a federal level continues to be strung along by a series of continuing resolutions to keep federal funding for surface transportation intact at current levels, one area which remains in high demand is the United States Department of Transportation’s TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) grant program.
March carloads—at 1,123,298—were down 69,190 carloads or 1.9 percent annually. Intermodal—at 928,350 trailers and containers—was up 31,348 units or 2.4 percent compared to March 2011.

Despite a sequential decline, non-manufacturing activity in March remained positive, according to the March edition of the Institute for Supply Management’s (ISM) Non-Manufacturing Report on Business.
In an unusual move that likely is dead on arrival in an election year, the trucking industry is asking Congress to raise the federal fuel tax on diesel in exchange for dropping a 12 percent federal excise tax on large trucks.
The TCI, which reflects tightening conditions for hauling capacity and is comprised of various metrics, including capacity, fuel, bankruptcies, cost of capital, and freight, was 5.9 in February, down from January’s 6.1 and December’s 7.0.
The specter of a recession in Europe appears to be more likely than not if it is not already happening and is reflected in volume numbers for European imports, according to the Global Port Tracker report from Hackett Associates and the Bremen Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics.
