By a whopping 2,252-to-8 margin, UPS pilots voted to authorize a strike against their employer, UPS, the Independent Pilots Association (IPA), the trade union representing UPS pilots, said today.

The United States House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure Committee yesterday unanimously signed off on the Surface Transportation Reauthorization and Reform Act of 2015. The proposed six-year, $325 billion surface transportation authorization was introduced by the T&I Committee late last week.

Carloads were down 5.9 percent annually at 279,547 and were below the week ending October 10 at 281,073 and the week ending October 3 at 290,725.

Earlier this week, FedEx union pilots represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) signed a new contract with FedEx management, which takes effect in November and becomes amendable in 2021. As for its chief competitor, UPS, though, things are not as harmonious, with the Independent Pilots Association (IPA), the trade union representing UPS pilots recently saying leadership called on its 2,528 members to authorize a pilot strike against UPS.

The December 31, 2015 Congressionally-mandated deadline for Positive Train Control (PTC) systems to be implemented on United States railways gets closer every day, but that does not mean the deadline will be met. In fact, it is quite the opposite, with both the Association of American Railroads (AAR) and various railroads and industry observers saying it most definitely will not be met.

Following news earlier this month that the planned $4.8 billion acquisition of Netherlands-based TNT-NV and a provider of mail and courier services and the fourth largest global parcel operator, by FedEx may be showing signs of coming closer to fruition, with TNT’s shareholders formally giving their blessing on the proposed deal, the deal’s prospects improved further yesterday.
