As an editor, it is no surprise that I talk with people in the public relations community from time to time, make that a lot of the time. That said, I thought it might be a good idea to re-post a blog I wrote earlier this year about ideal ways of keeping us editors happy and making sure we are getting what we need from you. Consider this, my holiday gift to you (thank you notes are not necessary….grin).

The Institute of Supply Management’s (ISM) Non-Manufacturing Report on Business for November remained on the growth path it has been on for nearly a year. The ISM’s index for measuring the sector’s overall health—known at the NMI—was 55.0 in November, a 0.7 percent increase from October.

Netherlands-based TNT NV, a provider of mail and couriers services and the fourth largest global parcel operator, said it plans to “demerge” operations by separating its Express and Mail operations into two independent companies. Company officials said that the main reasons for an internal separation are the increasingly divergent strategic profiles of the two units and the limited existing synergies between them.

The nation’s supply chain may be at risk if new sources of energy are not tapped in the near future, said the American Petroleum Institute

Railroad volumes for the week of Thanksgiving ending November 27 showed steady year-over-year improvements, according to data released by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

The reauthorization of a bill focused on diesel emissions reduction was passed by the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works earlier this week. The bipartisan bill, S. 3973, the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA), is authored by Senators George V. Voinovich (R-Ohio) and Tom Carper (D-Del.)

The final version, which was released this week, did not change course on this proposal, with the commission, led by Alan K. Simpson, former Republican Senate leader, and Erskine B. Bowles, White House Chief of Staff under President William Clinton, making the same proposal to fully fund the transportation fund instead of relying on deficit spending.

The November edition of the Cass Information Systems Index pointed to an uptick in freight growth following a decline in October. The index, which measures the number of shipments and expenditures that are processed through Cass’s account payable systems, has been up in seven of the last nine months.
