In a move geared to modernize its aircraft fleet and improve the global network of its FedEx Express segment, global transportation and parcel bellwether FedEx announced yesterday it has permanently retired or will accelerate the retirement of 86 aircraft and 308 related engines.

The new services are Mexico Direct, which offers faster customs clearance for Mexico importers, and a new intermodal service. These two offerings join CEVA’s existing U.S.-Mexico services, which include air and expedited Transborder offerings, including less-than-truckload, and full truckload, according to CEVA.

The average price per gallon fell 1.1 cents to $3.869 per gallon, following a 1.0 cent decrease last week. Prior to these two weeks of gains, prices were up a cumulative 4.5 cents over the previous two weeks.

Manufacturing activity in May contracted for the first time since November 2012, according to the Institute for Supply Management (ISM). The PMI, the index used by the ISM to measure manufacturing activity—at 49 in May was down 1.7 percent from April’s 50.7.
The National Freight Advisory Committee was established in February. DOT said the objective of the committee is to provide recommendations to the Secretary of Transportation on how DOT can improve its freight transportation policies and programs.

Mid-year less-than-truckload rate hikes—in the form of GRIs (general rate increases) for non-contractual freight—are back. UPS Freight, the LTL subsidiary of transportation and logistics bellwether UPS, and ABF Freight System, the LTL subsidiary of Arkansas Best Corp. each recently announced rate hikes.
