Following the recent attempt by terrorists to send explosives to the United States on cargo and passenger planes, Massachusetts Representative Edward J. Markey (D) said he plans to introduce legislation requiring 100 percent screening of all cargo on cargo planes.

Coming on the heels of the ratified labor agreement by Teamsters employees at less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation services provider YRC Worldwide (YRCW), LTL player ABF Freight Systems announced it is taking legal action against the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and various YRCW subsidiaries, as well as other entities.

Following two straight months of growth, the October edition of the Cass Information Systems Freight Index fell in October.

Less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation services provider YRC Worldwide Inc. (YRCW) took a significant step forward in its recovery plan, announcing that more than 60 percent of its roughly 40,000 Teamsters members voted to ratify a modified labor agreement.

Several media outlets are reporting that two United States airports—Newark, N.J. Liberty International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport—are on high alert after a UPS cargo plane originating in Yemen and had transited through Europe was carrying a suspicious package, which contained a printer toner package which was tampered with and resembled an improvised bomb.

As in past weeks, railroad volumes for the week ending October 16 showed continued year-over-year improvement, according to data released by the Association of American Railroads (AAR). Carload volume at 302,855 was up 9.6 percent year-over-year but behind the week ending October 16 at 303,664. The week ending October 9 hit 297,029 carloads.

Waiting for me in my ridiculously crowded inbox this morning was an e-mail from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, which informed me that economic activity—i.e. the Gross Domestic Product—in the third quarter grew at a rate of 2 percent.
