When it comes to the regional, small package service providers, it is clear that they are making inroads and growing market share although they still represent less than 5 percent of the total market. But even with that said shippers have made it clear in various industry surveys that they are open to alternatives to FedEx and UPS to reduce costs.

UPS said this week it has broken ground on a Parsippany, N.J.-based global technology development center, which will host software developers, designers and other IT professionals focused on collaborating and developing innovative technology solutions to serve customers, drive operational efficiencies and growth and run the company’s global network.
Even though their respective positions on a large-scale merger remain unchanged, Class I railroad carriers Norfolk Southern and Canadian Pacific made their voices heard in regards to CP’s perseverance in wanting to acquire NS in what would represent a roughly $30 billion deal.

In what amounts to something of a reversal of fortune, shipper confidence in the air cargo sector appears to be gaining on that of ocean freight.
Despite improved results in January and February, the March edition of the Stifel Logistics Confidence Index suggests that these months may have merely amounted to positive blips within a downward trend.
With Congress having passed the Surface Transportation Board Reauthorization Act into law late last year, a rail shippers group is ready for the bill’s objectives to be put into motion in order for the STB to be able to implement free-market reforms and resolve rate disputes in a swift and fair manner.
