The Association of American Railroads (AAR) said that U.S. freight railroads estimate they will dole out about $26 billion to build, maintain, and upgrade their nationwide rail network.

Carloads—at 1,100,858—were down 1.1 percent annually. Intermodal—at 993,807 trailers and containers—was up 1.1 percent compared to February 2013 and marks the 51st consecutive annual monthly increase for intermodal volume, according to the AAR.

With a sharp eye on safety in the wake of tragic accidents from crude by rail (CBR) operations, major U.S.-based Class I railroads and United States Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx recently rolled out what they described as a rail operations safety initiative comprised of new voluntary operating standards for moving crude by rail.
