With most United States-based railroads signaling they will miss the 2015 deadline for installing Positive Train Control (PTC), the Government Accountability Office said in a report it is asking that Congress should consider amending the Railroad Safety Improvement Act (RSIA) and grant the Federal Railroad Administration the authority to extend the deadline on certain rail lines on a case-by-case basis.

Carload volume—at 278,594—was up 2.2 percent annually, and intermodal was up 6.7 percent annually at 228,899 trailers and containers.

Intermodal in August marked the single ever best monthly performance for the mode at 1,031,179 containers and trailers, according to AAR data. This was up 4.4 percent—or 43,398 units—compared to August 2012.

Intermodal loadings in June continued their strong momentum at 1,009,387 trailers and containers, which represent a 1.3 percent—or 13,393 units—increase. The AAR said the weekly intermodal average of 252,347 in June now stands as the single highest weekly intermodal average for any month in history.
