ABF Freight System, the nation’s sixth-largest LTL carrier, has finalized a five-year deal with the Teamsters union that is projected to save the nation’s sixth-largest LTL carrier between $55 and $65 million annually.

Teamsters employees at ABF Freight System covered by the Central Region Local Cartage supplement to the ABF National Master Freight Agreement (NMFA), the sixth-largest less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier in the country, told ABF on October 29 that they have voted to reject a strike authorization.

ABF Freight System said yesterday that it has reached another contract extension with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters through October 29, while the groups work through the process for resolving the two remaining supplements to the ABF National Master Freight Agreement.

Late last week, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit affirmed the lower court’s decision to dismiss a complaint by less-than-truckload carrier ABF Freight System against the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and various subsidiaries of less-than-truckload transportation services provider YRC Worldwide, ABF said today.

ABF Freight System, the seventh-largest less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier by revenue, said this week that it has reached an agreement with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters for a contract extension through August 31 that it said will “allow for the conclusion of the voting process for the remaining six supplemental agreements to the ABF National Master Freight Agreement.

Nearly two months after ABF Freight System, the seventh-largest less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier by revenue, and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, said they reached a tentative agreement on a contract for the next five years, the company said yesterday that its Teamsters members have formally ratified ABF’s national collective bargaining agreement.

Mid-year less-than-truckload rate hikes—in the form of GRIs (general rate increases) for non-contractual freight—are back. UPS Freight, the LTL subsidiary of transportation and logistics bellwether UPS, and ABF Freight System, the LTL subsidiary of Arkansas Best Corp. each recently announced rate hikes.

The Teamsters Freight Division last night said that leaders from about 160 union local unions representing ABF approved the tentative master contract, with the next step in the process being a vote by ABF’s 7,500 union drivers, dockworkers, mechanics, and clerical staffers.
