The report, entitled “U.S. Freight Transportation Forecast to 2026, which is drafted by ATA and IHS Global Insight, calls for a 28.6 percent hike in annual freight tonnage, as well as a 74.5 percent gain in freight revenues to $152 trillion in 2026.

June seasonally-adjusted (SA) for-hire truck tonnage tonnage was up 1.8 percent compared to a year ago, and not seasonally-adjusted tonnage was up 4.7 percent annually.

In passing a Transportation and House and Urban Appropriations Development (T-HUD) appropriations bill yesterday, the United States House of Representatives received plaudits from the trucking sector for two provisions included in the bill’s language that the American Trucking Associations said “are critical for improving the safety and efficiency of the trucking industry.”

According to the ATA, total 2014 trucking industry revenue was $700.4 billion, which alone is a staggering number, but making it all the more impressive is that it represents the first time annual industry revenue has topped $700 billion.

Seasonally-adjusted (SA) for-hire truck tonnage in March was up 1.1 percent on the heels of a revised 2.8 percent (from 3.1 percent) February decline, with the SA index at 133.5 (2000=100). This is off 0.3 percent from the all-time high for the SA of 135.8 from January 2015 and is up 5 percent annually.

Trucking interests are asking Congress and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to make changes in the way the five-year-old Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program uses data collection involving truck accidents to rate fleets on their overall safety.

The ATA reported that the annualized turnover rate for large truckload carriers in the fourth quarter dropped 1 percent to 96 percent in the fourth quarter of 2014, with turnover for small truckloads carriers, which the ATA defines as those with less than $30 million in annual revenue, headed up 1 percent to 95 percent.
