The truck driver shortage is worsening, threatening the trucking industry’s ability to serve the nation’s supply chains. The shortage will almost certainly cause fleets’ costs to increase and shippers’ rate to continue to rise.

There is a short window for Congress to sufficiently increase investment in U.S. infrastructure investment before early 2016 presidential campaigns squash any hope of raising taxes to pay for the estimated additional $100 billion needed over the next five years. That’s the word from Bill Graves, president and CEO of the American Trucking Associations. He spoke at the 28th annual meeting of the North American Transportation Employee Relations Association (NATERA).

Seasonally-adjusted (SA) for-hire truck tonnage in September checked in at 132.6 (2000=100) for the second straight month, remaining as the current all-time high level for the second month in a row, with November 2013’s 131.0 now the second best month recorded.

Seasonally-adjusted (SA) for-hire truck tonnage in August saw a 1.6 percent increase in August on the heels of a 1.5 percent increase in July. The August SA index––at 132.6 (2000=100)––stands as a new SA high, with November 2013’s 131.0 now the second best month recorded.

Seasonally-adjusted (SA) for-hire truck tonnage in July headed up 1.3 percent on the heels of a 0.8 percent increase in June. The ATA’s not seasonally-adjusted (NSA) index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by fleets before any seasonal adjustment, was 133.3 in July, which outpaced June’s 132.3 by 0.8 percent, and was up 2.8 percent annually.

Seasonally-adjusted (SA) for-hire truck tonnage in June dropped 0.8 percent on the heels of a revised 0.9 percent (from 1.0 percent) increase in May and was up 2.3 percent annually.

To be sure the ongoing truck driver shortage is crimping overall freight transportation production, and based on data issued by the American Trucking Associations (ATA) that situation is unlikely to change in a meaningful way anytime soon.
