Following its mid-March proposal to mandate usage of electronic logging devices (ELDs) in commercial trucks, which was largely endorsed by large carrier companies and shippers, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) today issued a notice of proposed rulemaking, entitled “Electronic Logging Devices and Hours of Service Supporting Documents” in the Federal Register.

Seasonally-adjusted (SA) truck tonnage in February rose 2.8 percent, following a 4.5 percent decline in January. Compared to a year ago, the February SA was up 3.6 percent and on a year-to-date basis SA tonnage is up 2.3 percent.

The requested budget includes $90.9 billion for the United States Department of Transportation, which was soundly endorsed by DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx, whom said that the requested funds will lay a new foundation for economic growth and competitiveness by addressing the nation’s growing infrastructure deficit, making investments into the national infrastructure network, and increasing safety and efficiency.

Seasonally-adjusted (SA) truck tonnage in January dropped 4.3 percent, following a 0.8 percent drop in December, and the not seasonally-adjusted (NSA) index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by fleets before any seasonal adjustment was 122.3 in January.
