Amid a still topsy-turvy economic outlook truck tonnage volumes appear to holding up pretty well, according to data released by the American Trucking Associations (ATA) earlier this week.

In the second quarter edition of its Trucking Activity Report, the ATA said that the annualized turnover rate at large truckload fleets is now at 99 percent, up two percent from the first quarter. This marks the highest point for driver turnover at large truckload fleets since the third quarter of 2012 and is slightly ahead of 2012’s annual rate of 98 percent.

Seasonally-adjusted (SA) truck tonnage in July fell 0.4 percent following a 0.1 percent gain in June, and not seasonally-adjusted (NSA) index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by fleets before any seasonal adjustment, increased 3 percent from 125.9 in June to 129.6 in July.

The American Trucking Associations says that truckload volumes will grow 3.2 percent through 2018 and 1.1 percent annually between 2019 and 2024. Less-than-truckload volume should grow 3.5 percent annually through 2018 and by 2.4 percent until 2024.
