BNSF said that its 2015 capital expenditures will be allocated towards various areas of its business, including maintenance and expansion of the railroad to meet the expected demand for freight rail service, with 2015 representing the third straight year BNSF has invested a record annual capital expenditures investment.

Following a March decision by the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissions to recommend approval of Class I railroad carrier BNSF Railway’s Southern California International Gateway (SCIG) project, BNSF received more good news yesterday, when the Los Angeles City Council voted to approve the $500 million project.

Earlier this month, Class I railroad carrier CN rolled out plans to increase its assets by acquiring more than 2,200 new freight cars this year and 1,300 new containers. Company officials said the impetus for this is to support traffic growth and improve service.

In a recent filing with the Department of Transportation’s Surface Transportation Board (STB), a group comprised of several rail shippers voiced their opinions as to why allowing BNSF Railway to take a write-up of roughly $8 billion based on the acquisition premium paid by Berkshire Hathaway in its February 2010 $34.5 billion acquisition of BNSF is “objectionable for many reasons.”
