The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported that railroad volumes for the week ending December 4 were up on an annual basis. Carload volume at 303,570 was up 6.8 percent compared to the same period in 2009 and were up significantly compared to the 254,121 recorded during Thanksgiving week.

November rail volumes were up compared to the same period in 2009, according to data released by the Association of American Railroads (AAR). The AAR reported that monthly rail carloads for November—at 1,137,626—were up 4.5 percent year-over-year.

Like preceding months, October rail volumes were up and down when compared to the last two years, according to data released by the Association of American Railroads (AAR). The AAR reported that monthly rail carloads for October—at 1,196, 432—were up 8.7 percent from October 2009 and down 7.9 percent from October 2008. And the weekly October average of 299,108 carloads was the highest since October 2008, topping September’s 297, 502 weekly carload average.

Railroad volumes for the week ending October 30 showed continued year-over-year improvement, according to data released by the Association of American Railroads (AAR). Carload volume at 292,884 was up 6.3 percent year-over-year, but down compared to the weeks ending October 23 and October 16 at 302,855 and 303,664, respectively.

As has been the case during third quarter earnings, Class I railroad earnings continued to deliver strong results, with Norfolk Southern’s strong earnings results bearing that out. Earnings for the Norfolk, Virginia-based carrier at $445 million were up 47 percent year-over-year. And earnings per share of $1.19 were also up 47 percent, beating Wall Street estimates of $1.09.

As was the case in August, September rail volumes were mixed when compared to the last two years, according to data released by the Association of American Railroads (AAR). The AAR reported that monthly rail carloads for September—at 1,487,511—were up 7.7. percent from September 2009 and down 7.5 percent from September 2008. The weekly September average of 297,502 carloads hit its highest level since October 2008, said the AAR. September carloads were 1.9 percent higher than September 2009.
