This month’s report observed that there are plenty of concerns related to freight shipments in the form of imports, which are pegged for growth during this year’s holiday season, but at the same time are dealing with various issues, due to the port congestion issues being caused in large part by increased demand and West Coast port labor negotiations between the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) and the International Longshore Warehouse Union.

Coming off of a particularly strong June, freight transportation market conditions tapered off somewhat in July, according to the most recent edition of the Cass Freight Index Report from Cass Information Systems that was issued this week.

June freight shipments—at 1.201—were up 6.0 percent annually and were 2.4 percent higher than May en route to its highest level since November 2007.

May freight shipments—at 1.173—were up 3.6 percent annually and 1.0 percent better than April in reaching its highest level since October 2011. Shipments also increased for the fourth straight month and are up 26.4 percent higher than shipment levels at the end of the recession in 2009.

December freight shipments—at 1.037—were down 6.2 percent compared to November, which represents the third straight decline as well as the steepest monthly decline for all of 2013.
