June freight shipments—at 1.160—picked up where May left off in posting its highest level of the year, topping May by 0.2 percent and down 3.4 percent compared to June 2014. This gain comes at a time when the economy shows signs of “weakening,” according to the report.
For the month of June, the state of truckload and intermodal freight rates was again mixed, according to the most recent edition of the Truckload and Intermodal Cost Indexes from Cass Information Systems and Avondale Partners.

For the month of April, Cass and Avondale found that truckload rates in April, which measures truckload linehaul rates paid during the month, were up 3.8 percent annually, while intermodal dropped 1.9 percent annually during the same period.

This month’s report observed that there are plenty of concerns related to freight shipments in the form of imports, which are pegged for growth during this year’s holiday season, but at the same time are dealing with various issues, due to the port congestion issues being caused in large part by increased demand and West Coast port labor negotiations between the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) and the International Longshore Warehouse Union.
