A 10.2 cent weekly hike brings the current price to $4.078 per gallon, following a 4.4 cent increase last week and a 2.5 cent gain the week before. Diesel prices have been up 18 of the last 19 weeks. And on an annual basis, the price per gallon for diesel is up $1.009 per gallon.

This increase follows a 2.5 percent gain and a 0.1 percent decline, respectively, over the last two weeks, with diesel prices showing gains in 17 of the last 18 weeks. On an annual basis, diesel is up 96.1 cents.

After a 0.1 cent decline last week, diesel prices went up 2.5 cents to $3.932 per gallon, with prices up 99.3 cents on an annual basis.

In the previous Oil & Fuel column, I explained that throughout 2010 and early 2011 tight diesel markets had been pressuring the price of crude in much the same way that they did during the 2008 price run. My intention was to write a follow-up article this month that compared the factors underpinning tight diesel markets then and now. However, the rising turmoil in the oil-rich Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has taken the markets by surprise, and thus deserves attention.

Following a cumulative 29.8 cent hike over the previous two weeks. Diesel prices checked in with a 3.7 cent increase to $3.908 per gallon, noted the EIA. On an annual basis, diesel prices are up 98.4 cents.

The February edition of the Ceridian-UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index (PCI) dipped 1.5 percent, following a 0.3 drop-off in January. This cumulative decline washed out a 1.8 percent gain in December, according to the report’s authors.
