FedEx Corp. reported adjusted earnings of $2.51 per diluted share for the third quarter ended February 29, compared to adjusted earnings of $2.03 per diluted share a year ago. Without adjustments, FedEx reported earnings of $1.84 for the third quarter compared to $2.18 per diluted share last year.

Earlier today, FedEx and TNT NV announced that the proposed $4.8 billion acquisition of TNT by FedEx received the news they were hoping to hear from the European Commission (EC), with the companies saying they obtained the unconditional approval of the EC and the EC concluding this deal does not raise any competition concerns.

The planned acquisition of TNT NV by FedEx moved one step closer to fruition last week, when the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) signed off on the deal in the form of getting U.S. antitrust permission to merge, according to a Reuters report.

Earlier this week, FedEx union pilots represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) signed a new contract with FedEx management, which takes effect in November and becomes amendable in 2021. As for its chief competitor, UPS, though, things are not as harmonious, with the Independent Pilots Association (IPA), the trade union representing UPS pilots recently saying leadership called on its 2,528 members to authorize a pilot strike against UPS.

And it added that the new contract is comprised of across-the-board increases for hourly pay rates and new-hire compensation, a significant signing bonus, retirement plan enhancements, and work-rule improvements, among other positive modifications.

Rate increases will take effect for FedEx Express U.S. domestic, U.S. export, and U.S. import services, effective January 4, 2016. FedEx Express will increase shipping rates by an average of 4.9 percent for U.S. domestic, U.S. export and U.S. import services, and FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery will increase shipping rates by an average of 4.9 percent. FedEx SmartPost rates will also change. And FedEx Freight will increase shipping rates by an average of 4.9 percent.

Quarterly net income at $692 million was up 5.6 percent annually, and revenue at $12.3 billion was up 4.9 percent. Operating income at $692 million was up 5.6 percent. Quarterly operating margin—at 9.3 percent—saw a 2.2 percent annual gain, and earnings per share of $2.42 were up 6.7 percent but were below Wall Street estimates of $2.45 per share.
