Last week, the House of Representatives once again voted to extend the current authorization for federal aviation programs through March 31, 2010. For those keeping score at home, that marks the 17th extension voted by Congress since the authorization’s scheduled expiration date in 2007.

FedEx recently announced it will up its rates for its FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery units by an average of 4.9 percent, which will take effect on January 3, 2011.

Netherlands-based TNT NV, a provider of mail and couriers services and the fourth largest global parcel operator, said it plans to “demerge” operations by separating its Express and Mail operations into two independent companies. Company officials said that the main reasons for an internal separation are the increasingly divergent strategic profiles of the two units and the limited existing synergies between them.

FedEx subsidiary FedEx Trade Networks, the company’s global trade arm, is continuing its global expansion efforts, with this week’s announcement that it has opened five new offices in the Europe, Middle East, and Asia (EMEA) region. The company said the new offices are in: Budapest, Hungary; Prague, Czech Republic; Madrid, Spain; Milan, Italy; and Antwerp, Belgium.

FedEx announced earlier today that its FedEx Express subsidiary will acquire the logistics, distribution, and express businesses of India-based AFL Pvt. Ltd. and its affiliate Unifreight India Pvt. Ltd. Financial terms of the deal, which is expected to close by February 2011, were not disclosed.

UPS announced that new rates will kick in, effective January 3, 2011. Company officials said that 2011 rates will include a net increase of 4.9 percent for UPS ground packages and a net increase of 4.9 percent on all air express and U.S. origin international shipments.

Taking steps to keep pace with its global rivals, UPS is aiming to set up domestic service in China, according to a recent Financial Times report. According to the FT, UPS recently submitted an application for a domestic license to the China State Post Bureau, a local regulator, in order to offer shippers in China domestic next-day delivery service and second and third day delivery products.

Soon after less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation service providers YRC Worldwide and ABF Freight System announced matching 5.9 percent general rate increases, FedEx Freight said this week it is upping its GRI a bit higher at 6.9 percent, effective November 1.
