In an effort to meet anticipated holiday season demand in the form of double-digit volume growth, the United States Postal Service (USPS) last week said that it plans to deliver packages seven days per week in major cities and volume areas, effective November 17 through Christmas Day, December 25.

Earlier this week, FedEx said it is expanding its International First service for early deliveries with the addition of 31 new origin countries, which will bring the total number of origin markets for the service to 97.

The Memphis-based company reported today that quarterly net income of $606 million was up 24 percent annually, and revenue, at $11.7 billion, was up 6 percent. Operating income at $987 million was up 24 percent.

In recent years, transportation and logistics titans UPS and FedEx have only been able to provide domestic delivery service in China on a limited basis. But a Reuters report is signaling that is changing, saying that both companies now have obtained licenses from the Chinese government to extend domestic express package services to Beijing and other Chinese cities and not have to rely on joint-venture partners to deliver packages within China.
