In October, Schneider said it began providing service in the form of Mexico cross-border intermodal loads through Jackson, Miss.-based steel wheel interchange, with its intermodal Mexico Direct loads moving between Chicago and Jackson on the Canadian National Railway and then between Jackson and Mexico on the Kansas City Southern Railway.

The Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) reported this week in its Intermodal Market Trends & Statistics report that total second quarter intermodal container and trailer movements showed annual growth, albeit not at the levels seen in the first quarter, with total movements—at 3,885,581 trailers and containers—up 2.4 percent annually.

Carload volume—at 273,584—was up 1.1 percent annually, but behind the week ending May 28 at 288,049 and the weeks ending May 21 and May 14 at 295,148 and 294,271l, respectively. It was also behind the week ending April 2, which hit 305,905 carloads, marking the highest weekly carload tally since the end of 2008.

While various freight trends have seen numerous stops and starts in 2010, intermodal transportation is not one of them, according to the results of the third quarter Market Trends report from the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA). In the third quarter, IANA stated that third quarter intermodal loadings—at 2,995,043—were up 20.3 percent year-over-year. This was ahead of the second quarter’s 2,829,971 and behind the first quarter’s 3,019,310.
