CEO Timothy Gomez led the charge to vertically integrate manufacturing and distribution at the 218-year-old pencil company—and saved $5 million in logistics costs in the process.

The PMI, the index used by the ISM to measure manufacturing activity, hit 56.2 in September, which was 0.5 percent of August and now represents the highest level for the index in 2013. And it is above the 12-month average of 52.4 by 3.8 percent and has been over 50 in nine of the last ten months.

Customers today are more demanding than ever. This poses challenges as well as opportunities. If discrete manufacturers aren’t up to the challenge, they will face a customer that demands more visibility, more collaboration, quicker lead times and higher quality products with no ability to deliver on these new requirements.
