Entitled UPS SurePost, this service is a “contract-only service that combines the consistency and reliability of the UPS Ground network, from pickup through transferring to the Post Office, with the cost benefits of using the United States Postal Service (USPS) for final delivery," according to company officials.

According to the PRC, the USPS advised it that due to falling mail volumes and revenues it is considering eliminating Saturday mail collection and delivery except for Express Mail and existing post office box service.

Net income for the quarter—at $231 million—was down 3 percent from last year’s $239 million, but quarterly revenue at $9.66 billion was up 11 percent from last year’s $8.70 billion. Operating income—at $393 million—was down 6 percent year-over-year.

Parcel shippers that turn to third-party consultants (3PCs) to help them navigate myriad facets of pricing and rate structures from industry bellwethers FedEx and UPS may eventually find themselves having to fend for themselves when talking dollars and cents with these companies if a Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation finds that FedEx and UPS are colluding to adopt a policy of declining to negotiate with 3PCs acting on behalf of shippers.
