With an eye on making transportation of crude oil by rail (CBR) and ethanol safer following various tragic accidents over the last year, the United States Department of Transportation yesterday released details regarding its rulemaking proposal designed to improve how large quantities of flammable materials by rail can be moved in a safer manner.

Weekly intermodal volumes set an all-time record for the second straight week at 272,553 containers and trailers for a 7.8 percent year-over-year boost. The week ending June 14 now stands as the runner-up for weekly volumes at 270,243.

In casual conversation with friends, it surprises me how many myths still exist around moving freight by rail. “It must be slow, unmanageable, old fashioned.” Rail seems to conjure memories of pillows of steam hovering over charming brick stations, or lonely whistles heard from a distant train snaking through the countryside.
