On December 31, the Department of Transportation’s Surface Transportation Board (STB) said it issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that proposes new regulations to require Class I railroads and the Chicago Transportation Coordination Office, through its Class I members, to report certain service performance metrics to the STB on a weekly basis.

NS said that the D&H lines it plans to acquire connect with the NS network at Sunbury, Pa. and Binghamton, N.Y. and give NS single-line routes from Chicago and the southeast U.S. to Albany, N.Y., which is in close proximity to NS’ Mechanicville, N.Y.-based intermodal terminal.

BNSF said that its 2015 capital expenditures will be allocated towards various areas of its business, including maintenance and expansion of the railroad to meet the expected demand for freight rail service, with 2015 representing the third straight year BNSF has invested a record annual capital expenditures investment.

In light on various service-related freight railroad service issues, the Department of Transportation’s Surface Transportation Board (STB) recently announced it is now requiring Class I railroads to publicly file weekly data reports on service performance. These weekly reports are slated to begin on October 22.

CSX reported it had record third quarter earnings of $509 million or $0.51 per share, which was up 10.6 percent annually over $455 million and $0.45 per share and ahead of Wall Street estimates of $0.48 per share.
