Following the tragic event on July 6 in Lac-Megantic, Quebec, when a Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway train carrying crude oil derailed, resulting in a massive explosion and 47 casualties, Transport Canada, the Canadian equivalent of the United States Department of Transportation, issued an emergency directive designed to increase rail safety.

The Department of Transportation’s Surface Transportation Board (STB) last week came out with a unanimous decision regarding Rate Regulation Reforms, Ex Parte 715, which it said adopts revised rules to its railroad rate-reasonableness procedures as part of an ongoing effort to augment its rate regulation processes, specifically the ones focused on resolving smaller rail rate disputes.

Intermodal loadings in June continued their strong momentum at 1,009,387 trailers and containers, which represent a 1.3 percent—or 13,393 units—increase. The AAR said the weekly intermodal average of 252,347 in June now stands as the single highest weekly intermodal average for any month in history.
