With the holiday shopping set to gear up in a few weeks, it looks like the retail sector could use a seasonal spark based on declining retail sales in September, according to data issued by the United States Department of Commerce and the National Retail Federation (NRF).

Holiday sales—as defined by the NRF—are sales in the months of November and December and exclude autos, gas, and restaurant sales. For 2014, the NRF said it expects holiday sales to grow 4.1 percent compared to 2013 to $616.9 billion, which is above the actual 3.1 percent for 2013.

Commerce reported that July retail sales at $439.8 billion were flat compared to June and up 3.7 percent compared to July 2013, and NRF said that July retail sales, which exclude automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants, were up 0.1 percent annually and up 4 percent on an annual unadjusted basis.

Data issued by the National Retail Federation lowered its 2014 retail sales forecast, due to a slow first six months of the year (and largely negatively influenced by the terrible winter weather), but noted that retail sales are expected to be strong over the next five months to finish the year.

Commerce reported that May retail sales at $437.6 billion were up 0.3 percent over April and up 4.3 percent compared to May 2013, and total retail sales from March through May are up 4.3 percent annually.

Commerce reported that April retail sales at $434.6 billion were up 0.1 percent compared to March and up 4.0 percent compared to March 2013, and NRF said that April retail sales, which exclude automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants, were flat on a seasonally-adjusted and sequential basis, while seeing a 4.7 percent unadjusted annual increase.
