The United States Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) said today that trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners Canada and Mexico was up 8.2 percent in April 2012 compared to April 2011 at $79.8 billion.

With federal funding for surface transportation set to expire on March 31, the Senate took a meaningful step today in looking to the future, signing off on the Senate’s Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21) legislation by a 74-22 margin.

With the clock officially ticking away until the March 31 deadline for to Congress either—A-sign off on a new federal surface transportation bill—or B-pass yet another short-term continuing resolution with funding intact a current levels, there has been some movement on matters related to this effort in the last week or so, with later this month once the House returns from recess this week.

The Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today that its Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) dropped 1.8 percent from April to May, following a 1.0 percent decrease and a 1.9 percent increase, respectively, the previous two months.
