Teamsters retirees from the trucking industry currently enjoy some of the most generous pensions in America—up to $3,500 a month for 30 years of service from any unionized trucking company that contributed to multiemployer pension plans that once covered the industry like a warm fuzzy financial security blanket. But those pension plans, once thought to be the “Cadillac” of all retirement plans, are in deep financial trouble. And there doesn’t appear to be any bailout coming from Washington.

YRC said yesterday it is in discussions with the Teamsters to gauge “the next steps to move the company forward” on the heels of last week’s vote, which saw 61 percent of YRC’s 26,000 Teamsters members reject a five-year deal to continue 15 percent wage and benefit cuts.

ABF Freight System said yesterday that it has reached another contract extension with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters through October 29, while the groups work through the process for resolving the two remaining supplements to the ABF National Master Freight Agreement.
