According to the Freight Analysis Framework (FAF) study from BTS and FHWA, freight tons moving on the United States’ transportation network are pegged to grow 40 percent over the next three decades to 25 billion tons, with the value of freight expected to rise 92 percent to $37 trillion.

The ATA reported that seasonally-adjusted (SA) for-hire truck tonnage in August at 134.2 (2000=100) dropped 0.9 percent, coming off a revised 3.1 percent gain (from an original reading of 2.8 percent) in July. August is below January’s all-time SA high of 135.8, which was reached in January of this year.

Seasonally-adjusted (SA) for-hire truck tonnage in February was down 3.1 percent (2000=100) compared to a revised 1.3 percent (from 1.2 percent) increase in January. ATA said this reading marks the lowest level for the SA index going back to last September.

Seasonally-adjusted (SA) for-hire truck tonnage in May rose 1.0 percent, and compared to a year ago, the May SA was up 3.4 percent for its second-highest annual gain of 2014.

Seasonally-adjusted (SA) truck tonnage in February rose 2.8 percent, following a 4.5 percent decline in January. Compared to a year ago, the February SA was up 3.6 percent and on a year-to-date basis SA tonnage is up 2.3 percent.
