The trucking industry is giving itself a pat on the back after government figures show the rate of truck-involved fatalities on U.S. highways fell to 1.17 per 100 million miles in 2009—making it the trucking industry’s safest year since the federal government began keeping track in 1975.

March shipments at 1.108 were up 13.8 percent annually and 6.5 percent compared to February’s 1.036, with shipments above for the 1.0 mark for the tenth straight month going back to May 2010’s 1.014 breaking the 1.0 level for the first time since November 20008.

ACT reported that a preliminary reading of heavy-duty Class 8 commercial vehicle net orders for North American markets increased to 29,200 units in March, representing the largest monthly order intake since May 2006.

This increase follows a 2.5 percent gain and a 0.1 percent decline, respectively, over the last two weeks, with diesel prices showing gains in 17 of the last 18 weeks. On an annual basis, diesel is up 96.1 cents.
