October intermodal containers and trailers hit 1,381,749 for a 4.9 percent, or a gain of 64,701 units, compared to October 2013. October’s weekly intermodal average of 276,350 containers now stands as the best weekly average for any month, while October marked the 59th consecutive month of annual intermodal gains. And on a year-to-date basis through October, the AAR said U.S. intermodal volume is up 5.5 percent at 11,459,079 units.

United States Class I carloads were up 43,310 carloads–or 3.6 percent annually–at 1,177,655 in June, and intermodal containers and trailers were up 67,967 units–or 6.7 percent–compared to June 2013 at 1,077,385.

Weekly intermodal volumes set an all-time record for the second straight week at 272,553 containers and trailers for a 7.8 percent year-over-year boost. The week ending June 14 now stands as the runner-up for weekly volumes at 270,243.

Carloads were up 6.1 percent, or 68,301 carloads, at 1,186,314, and the total carload average per week at 296,579 represents the highest weekly average for the month of May since 2008, as well as the highest weekly average for any month since October 2011.
