Following a stretch of very modest retail sales gains in recent months, a more positive performance in May, based on data issued by the United States Department of Commerce and the National Retail Federation (NRF) could potentially pave the way for more meaningful gains in coming months.

Commerce reported that November retail sales at $442.9 billion were down 0.9 percent compared to November and up 3.2 percent compared to December 2013, and total retail sales from October through December were up 4.1 percent annually. The NRF said that December retail sales, which exclude automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants, were up down 0.9 percent seasonally-adjusted month-to-month compared to November and increased 4.6 percent annually on an unadjusted basis.

While it comes as no surprise that Thanksgiving weekend is commonly viewed as the true beginning of the holiday shopping season, it appears that, perhaps, the booming shopping volumes that come along with time spent with family and friends, too much turkey and football may take a bit longer to materialize than originally anticipated.

Commerce reported that June retail sales at $439.9 billion were up 0.2 percent over May and up 4.3 percent compared to June 2013, and the National Retail Federation said that June retail sales, which exclude automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants, were flat on a seasonally-adjusted and sequential basis for the second straight month in May, and saw a 3.0 percent unadjusted annual increase.

Commerce reported that May retail sales at $437.6 billion were up 0.3 percent over April and up 4.3 percent compared to May 2013, and total retail sales from March through May are up 4.3 percent annually.
