There are so many ways to analyze the state of truckload capacity, and on top of that there is, perhaps, no other facet of freight transportation that is so directly impacted by myriad moving parts, whether it be driver availability, rates, demand, weather, the economy, and, of course, federal regulations, among others.

According to its data, spot market volume for the month of September was up 32 percent on an annual basis and set a new record for the 14th straight month, with gains for each of the three equipment categories it tracks, including load availability for: dry vans up 42 percent; refrigerated (reefer) up 24 percent; and flatbed volume up 46 percent.

DAT reported that May marks the 11th straight month to see an annual record high for spot market freight volume, with its DAT Freight Index in May seeing a 40 percent annual increase.

TransCore’s DAT North American Freight Index, which reflects spot market freight availability on its network of load boards in the United States and Canada, posted a 40 percent gain in March over February and was down 6.1 percent annually compared to March 2011.
