Crown Equipment’s QuickPick Remote earns international design award

Award jury received more than 3,200 entries from 48 countries in 17 categories.

Crown Equipment, one of the world’s largest material handling companies, has announced its QuickPick Remote order-picking technology earned its third international design award for design quality, workmanship, ergonomics and functionality.

The most recent honor comes from the iF International Forum Design in the “Transportation Design/Special Vehicles” category of its 2014 product design competition. The iF jury has now recognized Crown product design excellence 35 times since 1969.

Crown’s QuickPick Remote is one of the first systems of its kind to utilize technology to reduce operator fatigue while improving productivity and safety. Order selectors press a button on a wireless transceiver glove to remotely advance the forklift to the next pick location, virtually eliminating the need to return to the operator compartment while picking. Crown field studies show that the technology helps reduce the number of steps order selectors take on and off the platform by up to 70%. Customers using QuickPick Remote have experienced an average of 10% to 25% increase in productivity, according to Jim Kraimer, director of industrial design – Europe, Crown Equipment.

“Research has shown that warehouse workers may walk up to 15 miles and carry up to 10,000 pounds per day,” said Kraimer. “With that information, our focus is always to improve productivity and efficiency while keeping operators comfortable and safe. With QuickPick Remote, operators experience much less fatigue from this demanding work environment, and they are more productive.”

Since 1953, iF juries have annually recognized outstanding design from manufacturers and designers. In 2014, the jury received more than 3,200 entries from 48 countries in 17 categories. Juries are comprised of internationally renowned experts from the fields of design, industry and education who work together to inspect, analyze and test each nomination for design quality, workmanship, choice of materials, degree of innovativeness, environmental compatibility, functionality, ergonomics, visualization of use, safety, branding and universal design.

FedEx recently took another step in its plans to acquire Netherlands-based TNT-NV and a provider of mail and courier services and the fourth largest global parcel operator for $4.8 billion, which it announced in early April. The company said it has “submitted the required filing to the European Commission to obtain regulatory clearance in connection with the intended recommended public cash offer all issued and outstanding ordinary shares in the capital of TNT Express.”

The American Trucking Associations last week praised Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) for her bill that takes some positive steps towards alleviating the current environment regarding the truck driver shortage.

Global third-party logistics (3PL) services provider Kuehne+Nagel (KN) said this week it has entered into an agreement to acquire ReTrans Inc., a Memphis-based provider of multimodal transportation services.
