FedEx and union-represented pilots reach terms on a tentative agreement
FedEx officials declined to comment on the agreement, outside of a brief statement issued by the company on May 30, which stated: “We are pleased to have reached a tentative agreement with our pilots as we continue delivering outstanding service to our customers around the world.”

National diesel average falls for the week of May 22, reports EIA
The national average fell 2.8 cents, to $3.855, per gallon, following a 1.4-cent decline, to $3.883, for the week of May 22.

Ocean shipping returns to pre-pandemic status
Following a year of record revenue for carriers, shipping analysts see the pendulum swinging in the other direction, as rates are decreasing, volumes are falling, and new capacity is coming online.

GEODIS expands drayage presence with acquisition of Southern Companies
A purchase price for the transaction was not disclosed. Southern Companies provides various import and export services, including warehousing and trucking, to ensure customer goods are moving swiftly through the supply chain.

Q&A: Jared Weisfeld, Chief Strategy Officer, RXO
Logistics Management Group News Editor Jeff Berman recently spoke with Jared Weisfeld, Chief Strategy Officer, for Charlotte-based RXO, the fourth-largest full truckload broker in the United States, and asset-light transportation services provider. Weisfeld provided Berman with a broad overview of how RXO views current market trends, including inventories, what may be in store for Peak Season, and capacity management, among others. FTR Shippers Conditions Index remains on a growth track despite sequential decline
For March, the most recent month for which data is available, the SCI reading fell to 4.5, following February’s 5.1 reading and January’s 5.4. These readings are nearly half of December’s 10.3, to finish 2022. November’s 3.0 reading was preceded by -3.1 and -0.3 readings in September and October, respectively.

Descartes acquires Melbourne-based Localz as part of final-mile expansion
Taking steps to continue to invest in its final-mile service offerings, Waterloo, Ontario-based Descartes, a provider of logistics based on-demand, software-as-a-service offerings, recently announced it has acquired Melbourne, Australia-based Localz, a technology platform to help engage with customers on the day they’re having goods or services delivered.

U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes are down, for week ending May 20, reports AAR
Rail carloads, at 225,093, were off 0.4% annually, and intermodal containers and trailers, at 245,601 units, fell 9.3%.

New FedEx offering aids U.S. customers with emissions-tracking efforts
Entitled FedEx Sustainability Insights, the company said this new cloud-based tool, which was created by FedEx Dataworks, leverages near-real time FedEx network data to estimate CO2e emissions for both individual tracking numbers and FedEx.com accounts.

Teamsters union overwhelmingly OKs strike vote against ArcBest LTL unit
The Teamsters union has come out guns blazing in the first of four separate negotiations with freight companies in the United States and Canada over the next year. In what is likely merely a negotiating ploy, the Teamsters negotiating committee said a strike authorization had been approved by members covered under ABF Freight’s National Master Freight Agreement (NMFA).
