Tariff hike on Chinese imports likely to hurt average consumer, says RILA

American consumers will bear the brunt of these tactics via higher prices on everyday items like clothing, toys, home goods, and electronics, says RILA

Latest Tariffs a Problem for Consumers

While various consultancies and advisory firms are suggesting ways for logistics managers to cope with new trade tensions with China, the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) says President Trump’s announcement imposing a 10% tariff on $300 billion worth of imports next month may be an even bigger problem for consumers.

“The list of products these tariffs will hit are almost entirely consumer-oriented,” said Hun Quach, RILA vice president of international trade. “This new 10% tariff on Chinese imports is a direct hit on consumer products and family budgets, plain and simple.”

She further stated that the list of products these tariffs will hit are almost entirely targeted to the average American.

“Tariffs are taxes on American consumers. And if these tariffs happen, American consumers will bear the brunt of these tactics via higher prices on everyday items like clothing, toys, home goods, and electronics.”

Families shouldn’t be “a pawn” in this trade war, she added, stating that this Administration must find a path forward what results in a fair agreement.

Quach concludes that the president's announcement “only moves us closer to consumers bearing the brunt of the pain.”
