AAPA Meets in Canada

Atlantic Canada’s largest city and the modern, bustling cargo facilities at the Port of Halifax will be the backdrop for the American Association of Port Authorities’ (AAPA) 99th Annual Convention and Exhibition, Sept. 19-23, in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

“We’re excited to return to Halifax, which last hosted our annual convention in 1993,” said Kurt Nagle, AAPA’s president and CEO. “During our business program, convention speakers will address a number of issues that are key to Western Hemisphere ports, including trade trends and the international economic outlook, improving the supply chain, and investing in infrastructure as a means to economic growth. Presenters and panelists will also share some of the seaport industry’s most innovative environmental and sustainable development initiatives.”

Of special note, convention attendees will have the opportunity to hear perspectives about the critical role of freight gateways and corridors from CN (Canadian National Railway) Executive Vice President J.J. Ruest, who will give the keynote address, and from Canada’s former Minister of Industry, Minister of International Trade and Minister of Foreign Affairs, David L. Emerson, who will receive AAPA’s prestigious Canadian Port Person of the Year Award. The award is presented in recognition of an individual or individuals whose outstanding work or service has made a significant contribution to public port authorities and/or maritime commerce.

In the convention’s busy exhibition hall, amid scores of port industry product and service providers showcasing various aspects of their equipment, technology and consultant offerings, AAPA will feature its new Twitter page, @AAPA_Seaports, offer materials from its “Seaports Deliver Prosperity” initiative, and provide event-goers other opportunities to connect with and learn about their industry partners.

The convention will conclude with a members-only annual meeting and installation of new officers for the Association’s upcoming fiscal year, including appointment of Port Freeport (Tex.) Executive Port Director Armand “Pete” Reixach as chairman of the board for 2010-2011.
