DHL opens up new service center in Northern Virginia

Global express delivery and logistics services provider DHL said this week it has opened up a new $1.5 million Herndon, Va.-based service center, which will serve the Dulles Corridor section of Northern Virginia.

DHL spokesman said this location had been planed for about two years, with the company adding that it was driven by DHL’s current and forecasted shipment growth from the area’s technology, public sector, and small-to-medium-sized businesses. DHL said this facility will handle different types of shipments, including international small parcels and palletized and container freight.

Mintz said the service center currently handles about 10,000 shipments per week, including pick-ups and deliveries. He also said that this facility will allow for earlier delivery times and later drop-off times for international importers and exporters.

And the new 18,000 square-foot facility, which is near to the Washington Dulles Airport and operates as the local center for pick-up, delivery, and sorting operations of international shipments, can process more than 2,500 shipments per hour. What’s more, DHL said that this facility also compliments operations of existing DHL facilities in downtown Washington, D.C. and the Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

“The Dulles Corridor is a booming market for international commerce and has strong growth potential for years to come,” said Greg Hewitt, DHL Area General Manager, Northeast U.S. ”This new facility will not only support customer shipment growth, but will allow for earlier delivery times and later drop-off cut-off times for international importers and exporters.”
