Diesel average drops 2.4 cents to lowest weekly average since June 2009

The Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported this week that the average price per gallon of diesel gasoline dropped 2.4 cents to $2.493 per gallon.

This comes on the heels of a 1.7 cent decline last week, which was preceded by its first increase in 14 weeks the week before, which was its first increase going back to the week of May 18. During the 14-week stretch of declines from May 25 to August 31, the cumulative price of diesel dropped 40 cents, with the $2.514 average recorded the week of August 31 standing as the lowest weekly price since July 27, 2009, when it was at $2.542.

The current average price per gallon is at its lowest point since the week of June 8, 2009, when it checked in at $2.498 per gallon.

Compared to the same week a year ago, the current diesel average price is down $1.285.

The average price per barrel of West Texas Intermediate Crude oil is currently at $46.48 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
