Rail volumes are mixed for week ending March 14, reports AAR


Carload and intermodal volumes for the week ending March 14 were mixed, according to data released by the Association of American Railroads this week.

U.S. carloads were down 3.5 percent annually at 278,856, which was ahead of the week ending March 7 at 268,820 and the weeks ending February 28 and February 21 at 267,060 and 259,544, respectively.

Two of the ten carload commodities tracked by the AAR were up annually for the week ending March 14. Grain was up 7.8 percent to 22,771 carloads, and miscellaneous carloads were up 16.7 percent to 7,979 carloads. 

Intermodal volume was up 7 percent compared to the same week as last year at 274,175 trailers and containers. This topped the weeks ending March 7, February 28 and February 21 at 253,762, 241, 958, and 213,617, respectively.

On a year-to-date basis, carloads are up 1.2 percent at 2,797,529 and intermodal is down 1.1 percent at 2,462,399 intermodal units.
