There is one labor issue keeping trucking executives awake at night, and it concerns the legality of using owner-operators as independent contractors in California and elsewhere. The issue is whether these owner-operators can be legally classified as independent contractors or whether they are actually employees. If it’s the latter, trucking companies would be responsible for paying much higher costs in terms of Social Security contributions, workers compensation and other labor costs.
Retail sales see solid increases in September, reports Commerce and NRF

Commerce reported that total September retail sales—at $549.3 billion—were up 1.9% over August and were up 5.4% annually. And NRF pointed to September retail sales, which were paced by apparel, continuing a V-shaped recovery from the pandemic, with sales growing for the fourth consecutive month.

The August TCI, which is the month for which the most recent data is available, came in at 8.31, which is in line with what the firm called a “very favorable rate environment for trucking during the month.” This reading marked a significant improvement over July’s 2.84, and marked its second-highest reading, going back to March 2018, with the exception of June’s 11.35, the highest reading over the last decade.

United States-bound September imports saw significant gains, according to data issued this week by global trade intelligence firm Panjiva. Coming in at 2,711,435 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units), September was up 11.1% annually. But on a year-to-date basis, through September 30, shipments are down 3.9% annually, to 20,874,996 TEU.
