The drivers for healthcare supply chain executives to make strategic supply chain investments and decisions are more than just a few, given the many moving parts of the healthcare supply chain. This was made clear in the sixth annual UPS “Pain in the (Supply) Chain” healthcare survey.

The company said that this offering is a proactive shipment monitoring and risk management product that protects consumers against lost profits, as well as help ensure time- and temperature-sensitive shipments reach their destinations while guaranteeing up to the retail value, and other costs, when unexpected events occur, such as weather delays.

On top of announcements heralding its first quarter earnings and its brokered deal with union membership last week, transportation and parcel bellwether UPS made inroads on other fronts, too, including its planned acquisition of CEMELOG, Zrt., a pharmaceutical logistics company based in Hungary, and rolling out its plan to purchase roughly 700 liquefied natural gas (LNG) vehicles and build four refueling stations by the end of next year.

Transportation and logistics bellwether UPS continues to make inroads in its healthcare logistics portfolio, with this week’s announcement that it is expanding its global healthcare distribution network in five North American markets, including: Burlington, Ontario, Louisville, Ky., Mira Loma, Calif., Atlanta, Ga., and Reno, Nev.

UPS last week announced that it has taken major steps to expand its global healthcare distribution facility in the Asia Pacific region, opening three new “state of the art facilities” in Hangzhou, China, Shanghai, China, and Sydney, Australia.

Regulations and cost management remain top of mind for healthcare logistics stakeholders.
