Watching the weather

If you are based in the Northeast Corridor, there is a decent chance you could not make it into the office today, due to Winter Storm Stella–for good reason. As I look out the window of LM’s Southern Maine bureau, the snow is coming down fast and furious to be sure.

And if you did make it into the office, or are planning to, being cautious, careful and alert on the roads goes without saying.

In case you are wondering about the status of a shipment, the weather may be keeping it off the roads or rails today, here are some links below to service and contingency plans for transportation and logistics service providers with Northeast operations.  LM will update this list as more alerts come in.  Newsroom Notes urges you to be safe today should you be on the roads or railways.

Weather Service Alerts:

FedEx:  ”Winter storms are causing hazardous conditions across the Midwest and Northeast regions of the U.S. Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our team members, as well as providing the highest level of service to our customers. Although contingency plans are in place, unavoidable service delays should be expected due to local conditions. FedEx is committed to providing service to the best of our ability in areas that can be safely accessed. Please continue to check FedEx Service Alerts for updates.”

UPS: “A severe winter storm is impacting service in all areas of Rhode Island and Vermont. There will be no pickups or deliveries today in these affected states. We are continuing to assess local conditions in states located in the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast for additional ZIP code impacts. We will work to ensure the safety of our employees while minimizing effects on service. Contingency plans are in place to ensure that shipments arrive at their final destinations as quickly as conditions permit. Visit here for the latest information on service delays, including ZIP codes where no pickups or deliveries are being made today.” Updates for UPS Freight are available here

XPO Logistics: “A large nor’easter winter storm is bringing heavy snow and strong winds from Philadelphia to New York City and Boston. Blizzard conditions are likely. These conditions will significantly delay travel. Freight passing through these areas may experience a 1-2 day delay or be rerouted. Please plan your shipments accordingly.”

Norfolk Southern: “As winter Storm Stella progresses across the Northeast in the next 24-48 hours, heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions are expected to impede train movement and working conditions, particularly in the Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York areas. Norfolk Southern is taking every precaution to prepare infrastructure and assets to minimize down time and delays. Customers should expect delays of 24-48 hours on traffic moving through these areas.” Click here for more information.

YRC Freight: Storm-related information is available here

A. Duie Pyle: “We are closely monitoring Winter Storm Stella as it moves through portions of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Regions. Delays and limited service are expected in parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts due to significant snow accumulations, road restrictions and blizzard conditions.” For more information, click here.

Pitt Ohio: “Severe weather in the eastern part of our terminal network has impacted our service in this area. However, because of this, every terminal will be affected to some degree.” For more information, click here.

A temporary tractor-trailer ban is in effect on New York highways and interstates.
